Earth Day Statement, Climate Change by Progressive Canadian Nanaimo-Ladysmith candidate Brian Marlatt

For Immediate Release:
Nanaimo-Ladysmith, April 22, 2019 –  Progressive Canadian candidate in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith by-election, May 6, 2019, Brian Marlatt issued the following statement on Earth Day, 2019.

Earth Day, addressing Climate Change, need to be more than protest politics and movement activism driving partisan politics.  Climate change is real.  Human-induced global-warming is real and a major contributing factor we can and must address. Risk mitigation requires critical thinking, understanding and action, evidence-based scientific research driving policy and action, not just protests, demonstrations and grand statements, just as it does in natural disaster mitigation and research.  Results matter.

Integrity and innovation must go hand-in-hand in an ordered way but too often we hear only that by stopping this or that activity, instead of mitigating risk in those activities, is the only way forward.  Measures like a carbon tax are proposed as if they are action but they are not unless their purpose is to invest in science and innovation.  “Days of Action” protests, contempt of court photo-ops, are not science-based measures, they are politics.  We can do better.

We need a new paradigm toward scientific-based policy and toward mitigation of risk driving innovation, critical thinking rather than protest, if we are to address climate change, human-induced global warming, and to make each Earth Day an accounting of what we have accomplished.

Brian Marlatt studied history and history of science at the University of Western Ontario.  His published writing includes general science comment on policy related to the social determinants of health and the intersection of epigenetics and bioethics.  His academic research led to participation as a delegate to a UN conference on natural disaster emergency response, recovery and mitigation in Lesser Developed Countries in the context of seismic risk and earthquake which were the focus of the UN IDNDR.

Brian Marlatt is the Progressive Canadian candidate in the Naniamo-Ladysmith by-election, May 6, 2019.
